[ He goes to sit on the bed. There's a wrapped box in his hands, made nice with a little holographic ribbon. He'd had it wrapped after the city reverted, but what's inside had come from the desert. ]

[ He shrugs, and then holds out the box. Inside, she'll find a very large platinum locket, carved with wildflowers. The oval is big enough to sit across all four of her fingers. Inside it she will find, separated across both its halves, a copy of the photograph she showed him of their family. Even in such a large locket, their faces are tiny, but it still conveys what Rafa had wanted it to; all of them together, her photograph of their future. After a moment, he pulls another one out of his own shirt. It's been hanging there on a chain long enough for the pendant to reach his stomach. ]

I got one for me as well. To remind you of where you are from, and me where I am going. Do you like it?

( this... really isn't what she'd been expecting when Rafa came to visit. she assumed just to chat - she doesn't miss that comment about being Nikolai's child.

she takes the gift and opens it with all the care of someone who truly values what's been laid out before her. once the delicate bow has been unlaced, she carefully removes the top of the box, gasping at first glimpse of what she sees.

she carefully pulls the pendant out, letting it dangle as it spins. it catches the light in her room as it slowly twists in midair. and when she finally opens it she runs her finger over the picture inside. she looks up at Rafa with wide eyes. )

You didn't have to get me anything, Rafa. ( still, she's not going to reject such a kind gift. carefully she slides it around her neck, cradling it in her hand. ) It's beautiful.

You really had it made for me?

[ He brightens noticeably when she seems to like it. Pleased, he lets his own matching locket hang. ]

I did. I found the locket in the bazaar, and when the city came back to itself, I took the picture you showed me and had it copied for these.

Will you wear it? I did not want to act...out of place, but since you showed me that picture, it has not left my mind.

[ He's sure it must be the same for her. After all, she actually knows them all. For him, they're only a promise. ]

Every day! ( maybe not every day if it's going to really clash. but she's pretty sure it will fit along with most if not all of her outfits. already she wears it around her neck, feeling the weight of it against her chest.

she likes that feeling. like a constant reminder of home. )

This is so sweet of you. ( and he has his own, which her eyes go to now.

she's not entirely sure how comfortable Rafa is with her. this is a nice gesture, but it's not real insight into his comfort. still, she chances a hug, pushing in quickly to hug him tightly. )

[ He hugs her back easily and automatically, laughing at the sudden reaction. Then he hugs her tighter, pulling her in against him and rubbing her back.

He knows it's been hard for her. He's not really the man she remembers, and he can't be without experiencing it all. Still, he sees her as part of his family, and wants very badly to know the future she'd promised him. ]

You are welcome. I hoped you would like it. Now we have a way to keep them close.

[ He smooths back her hair before squeezing her tight again. The first time she'd aimed a hug at him, he'd known nothing about her and had frozen beneath it. It's good to have a second chance. ]

( she tries not to let it get to her too much when he hugs her back. but it does choke her up a little to have that affection returned.

she knows it's a disconnect for him. saying she's his daughter but not sharing the experiences that brought them together as father and daughter. but they're making new ones together. they're still family in the end.

and this hug very much reminds her of how her Rafa held her the night she turned. )

I'm glad you're here. Whether you remember or not. I'm glad I'm not alone.

[ Rafa holds her a bit tighter. Dominic had told him not to worry about this. He needed to be himself, and things would work out with Zoey. He is the man she knows, even if he doesn't yet have the right memories.

This makes that feel more real. ]
